چکیده

The effects of prefumigation light regimes on plants indicate that light modifies the response of plants to ozone. Taylor et al. (11) reportecl that ozone injury to Pinto bean was reduced when plants were grown at the higher level of 2 light intensities. Menser et al. (7) foundl that ozone danmage to tobacco plants was diminished by an extendedl 22-hour photoperiod immediately before funmigation. Ascorbic acid is known to protect plants from ozone and other oxidizing agents. Freebairn (3) increased the tolerance of Pinto bean plants to ozone either by supplying ascorbic acid to the roots or by foliar applications. Freebairn and Taylor (4) nmade tissue analysis of smog-sensitive plants spraye(d with ascorbic acid. They found that concentrations of ascorbic acidl in the leaves increased and resultedl in partial to conmplete protection fronm air-pollution injury. This paper presents results of a study to determine the effects of light preconditioning on ascorbic acid levels in tobacco plants; andl the relation of ascorbic acid levels to ozone injury of 2 tobacco varieties, one resistant and the other sensitive to ozone. Ascorbic aci(l concentrations reported represent the excess formledl in synthesis over that utilized in metabolism. The results shoxv that light preconditioning caused notable differences in ascorbic acidl levels. These differences were associated vith chainges in the degree of ozone injury.

Biochemical changes of Conocarpus erectus (combretaceae) in response to gas refinery air pollution as an air pollution indicator

Environmental pollution consists of different types of pollutants in air, soil, and water. Due to the fact that plants can respond to environmental pollution, they can be used as bio-indicators for environmental monitoring. Air pollution in areas with oil and gas refineries nearby is an important problem. This study aims to survey the effects of gas refinery air pollutants on Conocarpus erectus...

Effect Of Ambient Air Pollutants On Wheat and Mustard Crops Growing In The Vicinity Of Urban and Industrial Areas

The study aimed to appraise the effect of different air pollutants viz. SO2, NOx, SPM and RSPM on biophysiological as well as yield characteristics of wheat and mustard plants grown at different sites in the urban and industrial areas of Haridwar City. The ambient levels of air pollutants were lowest at site 2 and 4 and hence these sites were treated as control sites for comparing the response ...

Protection of Plants Against Airborne Oxidants: Cucumber Seedlings at Extreme Ozone Levels.

The injurious or lethal effects of elevated oxygen tensions on the plant and animal organism can be reduced or prevented by thiols, Co(II) salts, phenols, and other inhibitors of oxidation (6,14). A variety of compounds including hydrazine, Co(II) salts, 3indoleacetic acid (IAA), and ascorbic acid can reduce in part the inhibition of lettuce seed germination by H.,O.2 or p-menthane hydroperoxid...
